'Kel Strong' Mabatah
Traumatic Brain Injury Survivor, Entrepreneur, Speaker, Philanthropist,
and Professional Athlete
After being rescued, Kel was rushed to a hospital in Nigeria where he remained in a coma for a week. Doctors performed the first of four brain surgeries there — a procedure that ultimately saved his life. Once stabilized, he was transported back to Houston, Texas, where he underwent additional surgeries and began a long and uncertain road to recovery. At Memorial Hermann Hospitals and later TIRR Memorial Hermann Rehabilitation, Kel endured multiple brain surgeries, intensive rehabilitation, and years of therapy. He had to relearn how to walk, talk, and regain use of his body. Alongside his neurological recovery, he also underwent oral surgeries to repair damage caused during the attack. Though he still lives with partial paralysis on his right side and continues outpatient rehabilitation, Kel has defied expectations time and time again. What once seemed impossible gradually became reality as his speech improved, his strength returned, and his determination carried him forward.

Throughout his recovery, Kel came to believe that his survival carried a greater purpose. Despite being told the odds were against him, he continued to push forward with unwavering faith, inspiring those around him through his perseverance and positivity. In January 2020, he transformed his personal journey into a mission of service by founding The ‘Kel Strong’ Mabatah Foundation, an organization dedicated to supporting individuals and families impacted by traumatic brain injuries. Since its founding, the organization has raised more than $350,000 to help individuals on their path to recovery. Through his foundation, Kel continues to provide hope, encouragement, and tangible support to others facing challenges similar to his own — proving that even in the darkest moments, healing, purpose, and transformation are possible.

From Tragedy to Triumph
For more than a decade, Kel Mabatah has embodied resilience, faith, and perseverance in the face of unimaginable adversity. On December 3, 2014, Kel became the victim of a brutal near-fatal attack while in Nigeria running his family business, suffering a severe traumatic brain injury along with multiple injuries throughout his body. The violent assault left him fully paralyzed on his right side and unable to speak. During the attack, his skull was fractured after being struck repeatedly with the butt of a rifle and other objects, causing extensive trauma to his head and mouth, including broken and missing teeth. While unconscious, he was also stabbed in the torso, and the injuries resulted in partial hearing loss and constant ringing in his left ear. To this day, the identities and motives of the attackers remain unknown.
